Technology
Clinic hair-removal lasers are not one machine. Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG use different wavelengths. That changes who they suit, how they behave on brown or tanned skin, and what you should confirm before paying for a course in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. IPL is a separate light method, even when it sits on the same price list.

Ask which wavelength would be used on you. The word laser on a brochure does not name the device.
There is no single best laser. Alexandrite at 755 nm is often chosen for lighter skin and fast coverage. Diode around 800 to 810 nm is a common all-round clinic platform. Nd:YAG at 1064 nm is the usual safer default for deeper brown skin because the longer wavelength reaches the follicle with less surface heating. Hair still needs enough pigment. Grey, white, and very pale shafts respond poorly on all three. IPL uses a broad flash, not a single wavelength, and is not interchangeable with those lasers.
Combination platforms exist. A clinic can own more than one wavelength. The useful question is which one they would use on your skin and hair that day, not which brand is printed on the console.

Laser light is absorbed by melanin. Skin melanin and hair melanin compete for that energy.

A face that tans in summer is not the same target as a covered underarm. Clinics sometimes use one platform for body hair and a longer wavelength on the face, or they delay exposed zones until pigment settles. That is a setting and scheduling decision, not a reason to switch to IPL because it is cheaper per visit.

For many Fitzpatrick IV to V patients, yes, especially with a tan. Some lighter olive skin can be treated with conservative alexandrite settings. If a clinic proposes it on deep brown or sun-exposed skin, ask why Nd:YAG is not the plan.
Brand can affect cooling, spot size, and how easy the device is to run well. Wavelength class still comes first. A poorly set Nd:YAG can burn. A well-run diode can be appropriate. Ask about the operator and the patch test, not only the logo.
No. Home units are lower power and built for a narrower use window. They are IPL, not alexandrite, diode, or Nd:YAG. Clinic outcomes still depend on the in-room device and the person running it.
