Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG

Clinic hair-removal lasers are not one machine. Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG use different wavelengths. That changes who they suit, how they behave on brown or tanned skin, and what you should confirm before paying for a course in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. IPL is a separate light method, even when it sits on the same price list.

01The short answer

Which laser type should you look for?

There is no single best laser. Alexandrite at 755 nm is often chosen for lighter skin and fast coverage. Diode around 800 to 810 nm is a common all-round clinic platform. Nd:YAG at 1064 nm is the usual safer default for deeper brown skin because the longer wavelength reaches the follicle with less surface heating. Hair still needs enough pigment. Grey, white, and very pale shafts respond poorly on all three. IPL uses a broad flash, not a single wavelength, and is not interchangeable with those lasers.

Combination platforms exist. A clinic can own more than one wavelength. The useful question is which one they would use on your skin and hair that day, not which brand is printed on the console.

03Wavelength

Why the number on the device matters

Laser light is absorbed by melanin. Skin melanin and hair melanin compete for that energy.

  • Shorter wavelengths (alexandrite) are strongly absorbed by pigment near the surface. That helps on pale skin with dark hair. It also heats brown or tanned skin more easily.
  • Diode sits in the middle. Many Islamabad clinics use it as a general platform. It still needs honest settings on Fitzpatrick IV to V skin.
  • Nd:YAG travels deeper with less grab by epidermal pigment. That is why it is the usual recommendation when skin is darker or recently in strong sun.
  • IPL is not a wavelength. It is a filtered flash of many colours. Scatter in the skin is higher, so the safety margin on pigmented skin is narrower.
  • Hair colour still limits every option. Low-pigment shafts do not take the pulse well, whatever the platform.

Skin, hair, and the Islamabad sun

Many patients here sit around Fitzpatrick III to V. Tone also changes across the body on the same person.

A face that tans in summer is not the same target as a covered underarm. Clinics sometimes use one platform for body hair and a longer wavelength on the face, or they delay exposed zones until pigment settles. That is a setting and scheduling decision, not a reason to switch to IPL because it is cheaper per visit.

  • Dark hair on lighter skin is the classic match for alexandrite and many diode settings.
  • Dark hair on brown skin usually points to Nd:YAG or a carefully run diode, not alexandrite at aggressive fluence.
  • Recent tan, outdoor sports, and driving with strong forearm sun all count as pigment on the zone.
  • Fine, red, blonde, grey, or white hair is a candidacy problem for every laser and for IPL. Electrolysis treats named follicles without needing pigment.
  • A patch test should use the wavelength planned for the course, on a hidden patch of the same area.

What to ask before you pay for a package

Marketing lists mix laser, IPL, and brand names. These questions separate them.

Name the wavelength, not only the brand
Alexandrite, diode, Nd:YAG, or IPL. Get the model if they will share it. Write it on the quote next to the body area.
Ask which platform they would use on you
A clinic can own two devices and still book you on the wrong one. The answer should match your skin tone and the zone, not a default package machine.
Confirm IPL is not being sold as laser
Some price lists say laser hair removal while the appointment uses IPL. They are not the same course.
Check cooling and who sets fluence
Cooling, spot size, and energy are operator choices. Ask who adjusts them and whether a patch test is included.
Do not compare quotes across technologies
A cheaper IPL series is not the same product as six Nd:YAG sessions on brown skin. Compare device, session count, and skin-tone plan.

Laser type questions

Is diode better than Nd:YAG?

Neither is universally better. Diode is common and can treat many patients with conservative settings. Nd:YAG is usually the safer pick on deeper brown or recently tanned skin. The clinic should justify the choice for your skin on that zone.

Can one machine do all three wavelengths?

Some platforms combine wavelengths in one console. That does not mean every setting is used on every patient. Ask which wavelength they would actually fire on you.

Is alexandrite too risky for Pakistani skin?

For many Fitzpatrick IV to V patients, yes, especially with a tan. Some lighter olive skin can be treated with conservative alexandrite settings. If a clinic proposes it on deep brown or sun-exposed skin, ask why Nd:YAG is not the plan.

Does the brand of laser matter more than the type?

Brand can affect cooling, spot size, and how easy the device is to run well. Wavelength class still comes first. A poorly set Nd:YAG can burn. A well-run diode can be appropriate. Ask about the operator and the patch test, not only the logo.

Are home IPL devices a substitute for clinic lasers?

No. Home units are lower power and built for a narrower use window. They are IPL, not alexandrite, diode, or Nd:YAG. Clinic outcomes still depend on the in-room device and the person running it.
