Preparation

How to prepare for laser hair removal

Good preparation protects your skin and gives the laser a follicle to target. Most problems come from waxing too close to an appointment, treating tanned skin, or using the wrong hair removal method between sessions. The rules below apply across body areas; area guides add local detail.

01The short answer

What preparation actually means

Shave the treatment area one to two days before the visit unless your clinic says otherwise. Stop waxing, threading, and plucking for several weeks so the follicle stays intact. Avoid fresh tan and strong sun on the zone. On the day, arrive with clean skin, no heavy products on the area, and a list of medications and recent hair removal history. Clinics in Islamabad and Rawalpindi may give slightly different windows. Confirm yours in writing before session one.

02Hair removal

Hair removal

Shave, wax, thread, or pluck?

The follicle must stay in the skin for laser to work. How you remove hair between sessions matters as much as what you do before session one.

Hair removal methods before and between laser sessions

Shaving

Before first session
Usually yes, 24 to 48 hours ahead
Between sessions
Usually allowed if the clinic approves

Waxing or sugaring

Before first session
Stop 2 to 4 weeks before
Between sessions
Avoid until the course ends

Threading or plucking

Before first session
Stop 2 to 4 weeks before
Between sessions
Avoid until the course ends

Depilatory cream

Before first session
Ask the clinic; often pause 1 week
Between sessions
Usually avoid unless cleared

Bleaching hair

Before first session
Disclose it; may reduce laser response
Between sessions
Avoid on the treatment zone
03Sun and skin

Sun and skin

Sun, tan, and skincare before laser

Islamabad and Rawalpindi have strong sun for much of the year. That affects scheduling more than most people expect.

Recent tan or daily strong sun on the treatment area raises burn and pigment-change risk. Many clinics postpone facial and arm sessions until the skin has settled. Self-tanner counts as colour on the skin. Retinoids, strong acids, and prescription lightening products on the zone should be disclosed before booking.

  • Face and forearms are hardest to keep out of sun between visits. Plan SPF and covered clothing if those areas are in your course.
  • A holiday tan is a valid reason to delay, not to push through with higher energy.
  • Patch tests should happen on skin in its normal state, not right after bleaching or a peel.

Sun on treated or soon-to-be-treated skin is the main reason courses get paused in high-sun months.
04Timing

Timing

When to do what before an appointment

Exact windows vary by clinic. Use this as a checklist to confirm at consultation.

  1. 01

Two to four weeks before: stop waxing, threading, plucking, and epilator use on the treatment zone.

  2. 02

One to two weeks before: note any new medications, peels, or strong skincare on the area and tell the clinic.

  3. 03

One to two days before: shave the treatment area unless the clinic specifies a different hair length.

  4. 04

24 hours before: skip retinoids, acids, and fragranced products on the zone if your clinic advises it.

  5. 05

Day of: clean skin, no heavy makeup or deodorant on the area unless allowed, comfortable loose clothing for body areas.

Treatment day

On the day of your session

Small details on the day reduce delays and skin reactions.

Arrive with clean skin
No makeup on facial zones, no thick lotion on body areas, unless the clinic tells you otherwise.
Bring your history
Medications, recent sun exposure, last wax or thread date, and any prior laser or IPL courses.
Wear loose layers
Tight cuffs and waistbands irritate freshly treated underarms and legs. Plan easy access to the zone.
Ask before applying anything
Deodorant, numbing cream, and SPF on the treatment area should follow clinic rules, not habit.
06By area

By area

Where prep differs by body zone

General rules apply everywhere. These are the extra points people miss.

Extra preparation notes by treatment area

Upper lip and face

Extra prep notes
Disclose cold sore history. Pause strong actives. SPF between visits is standard.

Underarms

Extra prep notes
Ask about deodorant on treatment day. Note dark marks from shaving or ingrowns.

Legs and arms

Extra prep notes
Large zones take longer to shave. Sun on exposed skin often drives spacing in summer.

Chest and back

Extra prep notes
You usually need help shaving the zone. Confirm whether shoulders or abdomen are in the map.

07FAQ

Preparation questions

Should I grow hair out before laser?

No. Clinics want short stubble from shaving, not long grown-out hair. The laser targets pigment in the follicle beneath the skin, not long hair above it.

Can I wax once between sessions if I am careful?

Waxing removes the follicle the next session needs. Most clinics say no for the full course. Shaving is the usual alternative if hair bothers you between visits.

How long after sun can I treat?

Clinics vary from a few days to several weeks after noticeable tan. Ask for a written policy. Covered areas such as underarms are easier to schedule in summer than the face.

Do I need to patch test if I had laser elsewhere?

Often yes on each new area or device. Skin on the face reacts differently from legs. Do not assume one patch test covers every zone.
